Kinski, previously known for their psychedelic rock sound, are an instrumental rock band. That's all you need to know to get an idea of what they do. Their fifth record, Alpine Static, offers up a straight-ahead riffy guitar rock sound in early songs and delves into drawn-out experimental noise in the later bits. The result is a bit schizophrenic, evoking a laundry list of modern rock influences but never quite finding its own tone. To connect with instrumentals, something special really needs to be happening in the music, but Alpine Static doesn't quite galvanize.
Kinski kick off Three Gut Records' fifth anniversary party at Lee's Palace Saturday (August 20).
