KOOP Waltz For Koop (Jazzanova Compost/Fusion III) Rating: NNNNNWho knew the future of slick, sample-based electronic jazz would come from two dress-wearing guys from northern Sweden? Oscar Simonnson and Magnus Zingmark’s view of jazz is deeply rooted in the past, in particular the swollen sounds of the 60s and 70s, but their execution is purely 21st century. Mixing samples and live instrumentation, Waltz For Koop is a seamless blend of old and new. Vocals by Terry Callier, Earl Zinger and Yukimi Nagano bring a live feel to the tunes, but it’s Simonnson and Zingmark’s work on the sampler that’s most stunning here. This is one of the few electro-fusion records that actually sounds like jazz rather than a chopped-up imitation. Disarmingly funky and as organic as dirt.
