KRS-ONE Kristyles (In the Paint/Koch) Rating: NN
Last year KRS-One proclaimed hiphop's need for godliness and released the much-maligned Spiritually Minded LP. Even God gave that album the bozack. Now he returns with a somewhat lacklustre new album, Kristyles. However, it must be noted that KRS has filed an injunction against In the Paint/Koch claiming they released the record before he was through with it; it definitely shows. The beats make Kristyles sound like a 1993 New York time capsule - the most high-profile producers here being DaBeatminerz - with occasional dabblings into a new-school Kanye West sound that falls flatter than an US3 remix of Lucas With The Lid Off. The real disappointment is the lyrics. KRS has been repeating himself in declining measures since I Got Next, and hopefully his re-release of this album - available for order at (866) HIP-HOP9 - will focus on something besides other MCs not being "real."
