Track seven, Mission Unaccomplished, from this EP is an exemplarily Lagwagon song. It has all the qualities that have made them Santa Barbara's longest-running punk band: Joey Cape's searing melodic vocal hooks, guitarist Chris Flippin's zooming octave chords and wry humour underlining all the self-deprecating lyrics. There's just one little problem: they've written this song 20 times over, at least. Rewind back to 1994's Trashed and spin Know It All, then compare it to B Side, the opener from this self-mockingly titled mini-player. They're completely indistinguishable.
If anyone remembers 97's Double Plaidinum - an aberration of a Lagwagon record where they veered off formula with Posies guitarist Ken Stringfellow - it wasn't particularly great, but at least they tried something new.
Lagwagon pull into the Phoenix Friday (September 5).
