All the pieces are in place for Land of Talk to make their move up the indie rock ladder. The Montreal trio landed woodsy critical darling Bon Ivor to helm Some Are Lakes and befriended the BSS crew. They also scored an impressive U.S. deal with Saddle Creek, which has put the welcome mat out for Canadian bands like Tokyo Police Club and Sebastien Grainger.
Ultimately, LOT's songs will dictate their trajectory, and principal songwriter Liz Powell sounds mostly up to the task. Her guitar chops impressively slash and burn on tracks like Corner Phone and Got A Call, then slow to a soothing flow on It's Okay. But whether her band is charging or strolling, her voice rarely wavers from a set mid-range, which can make the tunes difficult to differentiate.
Land of Talk play Lee's Palace September 27.
