LAURA

LAURA Yes Maybe No (Elevation) Rating: NNNN

It’s not every day that you get a letter from a Toronto Maple Leafs’ forward asking you to review a disc from his boutique noise-?rock record label. However, Leafs’ centre Boyd Devereaux has been busy building up Elevation Records (Black Mountain, Blood Meridian) and turns in a winner with Melbourne six-?piece Laura.

On Yes Maybe No, dark, delicate melodies twitch and twinkle before being ripped apart by massive walls of distortion and feedback. There’s also some frantic hi-?hat work and wide-?open reverby guitar lines on the amazingly titled Cardboard Cutout Robot Victim Hero Children, which could allow Laura to cross over into the larger indie ?rock arena.
