This new artist album by French techno icon Laurent Garnier is a bit difficult, to say the least. Drawn from the music he's composed for films over the past four years, it's not at all a dance album. Since describing a downtempo electronic album as cinematic is beyond clichéd at this point, he's already starting on shaky ground. But Garnier is nothing if not eclectic, and each song on this album tackles a different side of his identity as a DJ - be it dubby blues, classic avant-garde electronic music, punk, house, IDM, drum 'n' bass, world beat or jazz - a concoction that could have turned into a huge mess of empty references. Fortunately, Garnier has the depth and passion to pull off this kind of grandiose gesture and the sense of humour to allow us to forgive his more pretentious moments.
