Vocalist/guitarist Chris McCaughan must've grown weary of being compared to Blake Schwarzenbach after McCaughan's band's fourth album, The Greatest Story Ever Told, reminded punks why Lawrence Arms will never be as great as Jawbreaker. On Oh! Calcutta!, McCaughan's voice has acquired a new, grittier rasp that manages to pull Lawrence Arms out of the saccharine pop-punk muck in which bands like Fall Out Boy are perpetually mired. And while singer two, bassist Brendan Kelly, still isn't inspired by anything other than the band's exhaustively documented dipsomania, he offers up Calcutta's most infectious songs. Still, McCaughan's the group's true lyricist, and mines his renewed resentment toward his country with smouldering results. They also get points for shit-talking the Warped Tour to the point of getting banned for life from the circus. That's gotta be the ultimate punk compliment.
