Sometimes the title says it all. Deep House Music Mixed By Ben Watt And Jay Hannan showcases the snazzy turntable skills that have made the Sunday-night Lazy Dog gigs hosted by the Everything But the Girl member and his record collector sidekick the buzz of London.
The two-CD set, one featuring Watt and the other Hannan, digs deep for obscure material that the pair then further spin out of shape with all manner of chaotic beats. It’s not the best dance disc to come along this year — that trophy belongs to Armand Van Helden — but it’s worth a listen for fans of deep house, especially Watt’s superior set, which dips into his band’s own stellar catalogue while relying on more vocal than instrumental tracks.
