History has shown that supergroup recordings are almost always a mistake, so the decision to sticker the Life On Earth! disc with a notice proclaiming that the group involves the musicians associated with Dungen, the Works, Town And Country and Mia Doi Todd may actually be more of a caveat than a sales incentive.
But, hey, I’m a sucker for Swedish psych foolery, so I grabbed it and, happily, Look!! There Is Life On Earth! turns out to be a much deeper, more stylistically diverse and together recording than most of the slapdash experiments in ego management these one-off studio projects have become.
Life On Earth! don’t suffer the one-upmanship issues typical of such ventures, but rather seem to approach the production like a potluck where everyone simply brings their goods to the table to make for a more enjoyable shared experience.
If you enjoy the conservatory-schooled ingenuity of the Works and the fruity-folky side of Dungen but don’t understand Swedish, Look!! There Is Life On Earth! may be your new fave album.
