The re-release of Lisa Loeb’s solo demo The Purple Tape is her attempt to recirculate those early-90s gems that launched her into fame after Stay (I Missed You) made it onto the Reality Bites soundtrack. I suppose it would be hard to write another hit like that even if she tried for 16 years.
As Loeb explains on the bonus disc of recent interviews/live studio recordings, times have changed, and people buy CDs now, not cassettes. So her fans will be pretty psyched to get to hear the analog versions of her original acoustic coffee house hits. I only wonder, do her fans “eat sleep breathe” any more. More importantly, will they listen any more?
