What better way to honour late, great Nashville outlaw Waylon Jennings than having his best-loved tunes sung by Music City outsiders? All the contributors here -- Guy Clark, Dave Alvin, John Doe, Alejandro Escovedo, Robert Earl Keen, Nanci Griffith, Henry Rollins (!) and others -- have a good sense of the rebel spirit at the heart of Jennings's music while seeking to put their own stamp on his memorable songs. It would've been great to have more from Waylon's buddies besides Jack Clement and Kris Kristofferson. However, Norah Jones's beautifully understated Wurlitzer Prize comes as sweet consolation.
