Love as Laughter

Hating on Sam Jayne’s latest collection of dusty, shambolic rock ‘n’ roll cuts is impossible. Sure, the stuff here is so slack that, given enough rope, Jayne could easily have hung himself. Still, this disc, which was recorded over a chilled five-month period in a Delaware basement, is still a winner because it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Jayne cops classic Petty, nibbles on Neil (Young) and even pounds the Pavement (Malkmus-style) on the jumpy Canal Street. Perfect for a backyard BBQ jam with your Coors Light-downing uncle and some of your indie pals.
