If you’re ever in the unfortunate position of struggling through a breakup, Luke Doucet’s last record, Broken, is a great misery companion. A batch of self-pitying boozer laments, it manages to hook you in like a Smith’s album. Doucet, however, has since married the talented and striking Melissa McClelland (one of the four members of White Falcon), so he’d have to dig pretty deep in the pain well to find those same dark places on his new album.
Blood’s Too Rich is far more uplifting and less autobiographical than Broken. Instead, like the National’s Matt Berninger, Doucet creates some interesting characters.
His smoothly delivered twang rock approach makes you wonder if Blue Rodeo is becoming the Springsteen of Canadian rock. First Cuff the Duke, now Doucet. Actually, Jim Cuddy practically steals the album with his cuttingly sharp lead vocal on the title track. It contains what may be Blood’s most resonant line: “I’m too old for the girl I love, but she doesn’t know it yet.”
