LUKE VIBERT

LUKE VIBERT YosepH (Warp) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

For all his obvious electro smarts, Luke Vibert still prefers to play the joker. The producer consistently makes some of the most pulse-quickening hiphop-inspired techno beats around, but he can’t shake the novelty tag that’s followed him throughout his career. The squelchy YosepH is no different, mashing up acid funk, Miami bass, comedy samples and jackhammer beats to an enjoyable but ultimately empty effect. As technically dazzling as tracks like Freak Time Baby might be, Vibert covered this ground a decade ago, and YosepH’s the kind of record he could program in his sleep. Luke Vibert plays the Opera House Tuesday (November 11).
