Madd Scientists Antennae Town (independent) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

The Madd Scientists are a blues outfit consisting of Toronto folk musician Jim Layeux, who has a few records under his belt, Eric Laimer and Ben Knight. Structurally, Antennae Town is sound, with fine, crisp guitars and strong blues configurations, and Layeaux’s vocals are lively and worn in that old blues tradition. The blues ought to either make you cry or make you dance – you might as well, cuz everything is such a mess. Antennae Town is a little too clean to provoke either reaction, and there’s little variation in tempo. I say step it up or bring it down to a slow groove. The composition is there in spades, but the feeling isn’t, and that’s what the blues is all about. Put your soul into it. Rip your heart out. Lie on the floor bleeding. Then I’ll be happy.

Madd Scientists perform at Ziggy’s Saturday (March 27).
