MAGDA

Rating: NNN

Minimal techno’s had a comeback in recent years and started to shed its academic, serious image in favour of a return to the quirky robot funk that spawned the genre. Magda is a prime example of the lighthearted and bouncy side, a sound encapsulated in this mix — a digitally assisted romp through an astounding 71 tracks over 78 minutes. Given all the chopping and layering, you’d have to be very familiar with the source material to recognize much of it, but the reassembling of the elements has produced a disc that functions well as a DJ mix, even if it was assembled out of song fragments. One shortcoming is that Magda hasn’t always left enough room for the tracks to develop before moving on to the next idea, though that prevents it from getting boring.
