An after-hours minor-key affair, What Comes After The Blues finds Magnolia Electric Co boss Jason Molina in a reflective mood, singing his style of hillbilly haiku with a whisper-soft moan, sweetly supported by the skilful high harmonies of Jennie Benford of Pinetops notoriety. The lightly strummed acoustic guitars and pedal steel will have folks calling this Magnolia’s country coming-out, but the soul-searching passages and hymn-like solemnity of Molina’s delivery makes it much closer in spirit to gospel. Sounds like we’ll be hearing more from this character in the years to come.
