Mount Real verbal combatant Malicious confidently drops his 18-song debut, which is bursting at the seams with more hot lines than the adult classified ads at the back of this magazine. Beauty-licious Summer Walker appears in the Breakfast video, where Malicious barely expands beyond rich rapper clichés — if she keeps you for ‘lunch, dinner and breakfast,’ how reckless is she, really? But I digress.
D.R. One from Offsides and Team Canada represent with sharp DJ cuts, while Mr. Malish’s self-produced, rugged East Coast-influenced bangers rub elbows with some uninspired productions. At times, his lyrics suffer due to the music’s occasionally blatant dance-floor/pop radio aspirations. Total surprises are few and far between, but Malicious’s sound and honesty are commendable on tracks like the rugged Montreal anthem Heavy M-T-L.
