Manu Chao would seem to be the perfect artist to release a live album. The peripatetic Spaniard virtually lives on the road and gives off enough energy to juice up even the most staid crowd. But even a performer as explosive as Chao can't compensate for the restrictions of recording a straight-up live album. Radio Bemba Sound System is all energy. Chao and his big band work at a blinding pace, skipping from song to song at triple time and tearing through 28 songs in just over an hour. It's fast and furious, but at the expense of any real songs or context. Without the accompanying DVD -- set to be released later this year -- it's a bit like watching a film blind. Stick with Chao's masterful Proxima Estacion: Esperanza disc instead.
