After he moved from Dublin to Manhattan in the 90s to mooch off his brother, who opened famed club Sin-e, Geary regularly took the stage before the revered Jeff Buckley. While he may not have been in Buckley’s league at the time, Geary now creeps closer to his mentor’s mojo. Ghosts, a huge step forward from the stark Nick Drake/Elliott Smith melancholia of Geary’s debut, is packed with lush, gorgeous melodies and an acute understanding of subtle hooks. Take the title track, for instance, which chugs along like a freight train with a driving, funky rhythm guitar that propels the song right off the tracks and into the uncharted territory where Geary seems most at home.
