MARY J. BLIGE

Rating: NNN

This woman has survived so much relationship trouble that she’s basically invincible now. There could be a nuclear war and she’d be left standing there like, “Yeah, that’s right, MJB y’all.” Then she’d record an album about it called Last Woman Alive, and it would be good. Why? Cuz she’s the queen of hiphop soul, as she sings herself on The Breakthrough. This is typical Mary J. – a couple of very hot songs, including MJB Da MVP, where she Bligerizes The Game’s/50 Cent’s Hate It Or Love It. Fortunately, Will.I.Am produces About You like an old BEP song, and newcomer Brook provides some solid vocals on an album full of slick cutting-edge production. But Can’t Hide From Love, featuring Jay-Z, is a rip-off – it’s only the Jiggaman’s ad-libs.
