Hey, did you hear about how new wave is totally all the rage? Maximo Park is the latest in the never-ending parade of buzz bands championed by the likes of NME. The difference, though, is that it seems like these guys actually deserve the hype. The Newcastle-upon-Tyne outfit have filled an album with fun, danceable music that pays homage to both Gang of Four and early Elvis Costello. The angular guitar work and rousing choruses are complemented by warm and slightly lo-fi production, and the end result is an album full of catchy, likeable songs that also benefit from a judicious use of keys.
Maximo Park go new-wave crazy at Lee's Palace Tuesday (June 14).
