MAYBRICK Breakuptheband (independent) Rating: NNN
Local power pop quintet Maybrick have finally completed their follow-up to their 1998 debut, White Noise. Apparently, they experienced a long run of bad luck that almost convinced them to call it quits; hence the title. There's a lot to like here for fans of Britpop. They seem to be trying to condense the various aspects of alternative pop into one sound, and actually succeed in piecing together a coherent sound for themselves out of the references. Singer Joshua Norton's Smiths fascination is evident in his phrasing and melancholy, but he unfortunately lacks Morrissey's sense of irony, which would have kept some of his moping in check. Maybrick play the Kathedral tonight (Thursday, June 13).
