McCOY TYNER

During McCoy Tyner’s 10-year stint with Milestone, John Coltrane’s pianist of choice recorded some 20 albums under his own name, so there wouldn’t have been any trouble finding enough amazing material for a two-disc best-of – a second disc of strictly solo performances would’ve been great – without having to add a bonus sampler disc of mostly unrelated recordings by his Milestone contemporaries. In any case, the nine-track retrospective collection is at least well chosen, focusing on the larger orchestrations of his own stellar compositions on the spiritual jazz tip that wouldn’t sound out of place on Strata East. While not even close to being a definitive look at Tyner’s impressive 70s output for the label, it’s nevertheless an excellent introduction to one of the truly great pianists of our time and should inspire further investigation.

See the McCoy Tyner Septet with Wallace Roney at Nathan Phillips Square tonight (Thursday, June 29) at 8 pm.
