Mechanical Wonder

Rating: NNNN

If the problem with Ocean Colour Scene was separating them from heaps of other Britpop combos making strummy, upbeat pop, then Mechanical Wonder is the voice they needed to stand out. While flashes of tambourine and keyboards slick up the edges, at its core Mechanical Wonder is a terrific collection of songs shot straight from the soul. Whether the quartet are creeping through a lovely ballad like Biggest Thing or charging through an insanely catchy, mod-damaged hustle like Up On The Downside, we’re yanked along for the ride. Resistance is futile. Ocean Colour Scene play the Opera House tonight (Thursday, May 3).
