You can’t keep a good Megadeth down, but how often is there a good Megadeth? Actually, right now there is, kinda. Perhaps Dave Mustaine’s thinking more clearly in the wake of his semi-recent emotional faceoff with Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield (see the doc Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster, if you’re confused), because The System Has Failed is some pretty good times. It’s got sweet guitars and powerful drums as well as a decent vocal job by Mustaine, and Megadeth are sounding closer to their roots than ever. Although, come to think of it, Megadeth’s sound does veer oddly close to Metallica on this release, but at least it’s decent-era Metallica – it rocks hard enough and isn’t too creaky.
