MELODY GARDOT Worrisome Heart (Universal) Rating: NNN
It's often hard to separate the music from the artist. In the case of Melody Gardot - disabled by a horrific car accident at 19 and discovered from the therapeutic bedroom recordings she created on the advice of her doctor - it's nearly impossible.
Granted, her self-penned jazz-blues lite is not going to reinvent the wheel, but her subtly strong voice (like a purer Madeleine Peyroux) effortlessly musters the kind of hurt and pain that made the best blues singers great.
Melody Gardot plays the Mod Club Wednesday (August 27).
