This is Stars singer Torquil Campbell's sideband with childhood friend Chris Dumont. They used to be in a New York-based band called Luxe with Chris Seligman (Stars) and Metric's Jimmy Shaw before everyone split off, moved north and became Canadian indie rock gods. That is, everyone except Dumont, who stayed behind to be a carousel carny in Central Park. Hopefully A Little Place is redemptive for Dumont, whose restrained guitar work unselfishly anchors Campbell's dominating whisper/ speak/sing vocal treatment, which often sounds unsettlingly similar to Ben 'Mr. Sensitive' Gibbard. Shaw plays bass in every song and, unsurprisingly, most of the record sounds like Stars, but especially when the trumpets hit in the standout track In The Cinema Alone.
Memphis shine at Lee's Palace tonight (Thursday, September 28).
