MERKURY BURN Rumours Of Our Death (Independent) Rating: NNNN
Imagine if, post-Rocky Horror, Dr. Frank N. Furter and Magenta shared speedballs with the New York Dolls and formed a band, with Rocky bringing up the bass. You'd probably end up with something resembling Merkury Burn. Rumours Of Our Death, the local outfit's second album in less than two years, is a fabulous and twisted blend of new wave, punk, glam rock and a hint of metal, buoyed by the quivering, sexy bravado of Kelly Clipperton's voice. It's worth checking out for the killer cover of Madonna's Dress You Up alone, but the entire disc rocks harder than a coked-up Tasmanian devil doing the Time Warp. Merkury Burn play the Tequila Lounge tonight (Thursday, February 14).
