As the story goes, real country legend Merle Haggard, who'd just recorded his salute to western swing great Bob Wills, was invited to appear on Austin City Limits back in 1978. Being unfamiliar with the program, Haggard was going to blow it off when Hag fan Darrell Royal, who happened to be the Texas Longhorns football coach (and thus the most powerful man in Austin), put in a call, and miraculously, Haggard rerouted his tour.
Good thing, because we can now enjoy this amazing CD/DVD document of Haggard performing at his peak backed by the Strangers, featuring Telecaster master Roy Nichols, Norm Hamlet on pedal steel and fantastic fiddler Gordon Terry, who notably played with Bill Monroe, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Neil Young. If you don't already know why George Jones cites Haggard as his favourite singer, this should straighten it out.
