For the fifth instalment in the Messin Around dance floor jazz mix disc series, UK DJ and Jazz Cafe main man Adrian Gibson and Messin Around club night co-founder Perry Louis of the JazzCotech Dancers have decided to downplay the deep-digging concept of collections past to focus on more recent recordings of currently active nu-jazz, funk and Latin jazz acts currently rocking clubs across Europe and Japan. This makes the hard-swinging two-disc set double quite nicely as a state-of-the-scene survey.
But along with the well-chosen set of movers and groovers from the likes of Sleepwalker, Grupo X, Quasimode, Plumstead Radical Club, the Hi-Fly Orchestra, Nostalgia 77, Jazz Juice and Ottawa Afrobeat pounders the Soul Jazz Orchestra, Gibson slips in a few overlooked classics from Mark Murphy & the Louis Van Dyke Trio, Ronnie Aprils Positive Energy and Sheila Landis that dont sound at all out of place.
As a bonus, you also get Elizabeth Shepherds rarely seen Four video clip featuring the JazzCotech Dancers in action.
DJ Adrian Gibson is joined by Elizabeth Shepherd and John Kong at the Supermarket Friday (January 11).
