Metric rock the Sound Academy tonight (Thursday, February 7). Rating: NNN
Speaking as a selfish Toronto fan, I’d hoped Metric would hold out a little longer before releasing a DVD – at least until their set could include some of the new material they flashed us last September at V Fest. Instead, Live At Metropolis is a carbon copy of the show they’ve been doing since Live It Out dropped in 2005. Not a bad performance, but it’s feeling a little dusty.
In the concert filmed almost a year ago, the young Montreal crowd is weirdly lifeless until Metric pull out Monster Hospital at the midway point. The show then builds steam but doesn’t peak until closers Combat Baby and Hustle Rose. Winnipeg filmmaker Deco Dawson does a formidable editing job but inexplicably goes nuts at coda Dead Disco, overworking the splice button and adding cheesy video FX like multiplying Emily Haines. One is plenty.
