Techno god Jeff Mills checks in with a sprawling 18-track album as Millsart it’s a slower, more melodic extension of his characteristic sound. Fans of hard, minimal Mills may want to pass on this one. There’s very little pounding, although there is a bit of singing and some live instruments. Carl Craig fans will recognize many of the sounds, but it doesn’t feel retro or derivative. Sometimes it sounds as if he’s trying to program his sequencers to come off like a robot jazz band, but there’s also more experimentation through odd rhythms and dissonant synth riffs. Weird, yes, but soulful.
