On her third album, avant-garde electronic artist Mira Calix opts for a more organic direction, bringing along bits of a children’s choir, gurgling water and other nature-based found sounds as well as deconstructed fragments of acoustic instruments. There’s something soothing about the overall feel, but at the same time it’s also somewhat unsettling and far from easy listening. Eyes Set Against The Sun has some gorgeous moments, but often Calix sounds like she’s trying too hard to avoid making something identifiably musical. She worries too much about form and not enough about content.
