Misstress Barbara has taken a bit of heat lately from some fans for moving away from the pummeling hard techno she made her name on in favour of quirkier, more minimalist beats. Yes, she, too, is now playing lots of that acid-influenced, future-retro, bleepy minimal funk that we really need a proper name for. Long-time fans might take this new direction to mean that they're being deserted, but she actually pulls this off quite well. The aggression is still there, but there's a sexier edge to it now, and a pleasingly sleazy dirtiness that was previously hidden under the relentless pounding.
Misstress Barbara plays Friday (February 24) at This Is London.
