Missy Elliott

Rating: NN

Between working on her horribly lame reality show and developing her Respect M.E. fashion line, Missy Elliott obviously hasn’t had much time to create any innovative music for her new disc, The Cookbook. Cameos by Slick Rick, Grand Puba and Mary J. Blige are wasted on tired old-school throwback jams, and Elliott’s ill-advised attempts at love ballads quickly become tedious. The ode to her man’s “magic stick” is straight-up embarrassing, and she should really consider leaving the faux ragga-style rapping to her hired yardies. If the name on this disc were anyone’s but Missy Elliott’s, the label would’ve sent it back for a rethink. Hugely disappointing.
