MIXMASTER MIKE

Rating: NNN

Invisibl Skratch Pikl and current Beastie Boys DJ Mixmaster Mike seems to know everyone in hiphop and doesn’t lack skills behind the decks, so the only real surprise about this mixed CD is that it took so long. With a couple of interesting but ultimately unlistenable solo albums already out, Mike’s plan on Spin Psycle seems to be to cut down on the widdly-widdly pyrotechnics and largely let the songs speak for themselves. No worries there when you’ve got tracks by Gang Starr, Fat Lip, KRS and Large Professor on your tape, but beyond selecting the tunes and cutting back and forth between two copies, Mike is fairly invisible. Songs aren’t mixed together at all, but are played all the way through, with some frantic scratching in the middle but nothing particularly compelling or original. You’d expect more from a former world-champion Mixmaster.
