Modeselektor

Rating: NNNN

For a brief moment in the mid 00s, this kind of crazy-quilt anything-goes DJ mix seemed more the norm than the exception. Unfortunately, in more recent years, most of the big names in dance music have retreated to the safety of genre-segregated compilations focusing on only one sound.

Given Modeselektor’s freewheeling approach to producing techno records, we expected the Berlin duo to push some boundaries with this DJ mix. But we didn’t imagine they’d be covering this much musical ground, and the results are highly engaging. There are nods to minimal techno’s past and present, throbbing dubstep, crowd-pleasing electro anthems, glitchy breakbeats and some detours into hip-hop – all of it mixed seamlessly at a breakneck pace.

Body Language sums up the hot club sounds of the minute, and by bringing it all together on one disc, they’ve made a strong argument for the importance of DJs getting out of their little sub-genre comfort zones.

Modeselektor play the Mod Club Wednesday (November 4).
