MONEEN/ALEXISONFIRE

Rating: NN

I guess the premise of the Switcheroo Series is kind of neat: two buddy-buddy bands decide to reinterpret each other’s songs. It’s not like a new phenomenon — Rancid and NOFX did it, and that was fun — but when the bands happen to be Moneen and Alexisonfire, the odds are definitely in favour of one outshining the other. The clear winner here is Moneen. While Alexisonfire simply play straight-up covers and scream over top, even when it’s wholly unnecessary, Moneen prove to have a much greater grasp of this kind of thing. They eschew the contrived angst and cookie-cutter screamo bullshit and instead opt to breathe new life into AOF’s tired material. Only for really, really big fans.
