Mood Ruff

Rating: NNN

Mood Ruff had a video a few years back for a track with a beat that was such a blatant rip-off of Method Man/Redman’s Da Rockwilder that years later they have yet to fully recoup my respect. That said, their new album, I Do My Own Stunts, helps. The beats (most notably that of the Kemo-produced On The J.O.B.) are pretty tight and cooled-out-sounding, and the rhymes, which deal with how dope they are (falling asleep), the things they love (snooze) how they’re staying true to classic hiphop (snore) and a story of their fling with a cougar (funny!) are passable and occasionally impressive. Production problems arise when the Ruffs awkwardly try to incorporate R&B into the mix, and Spitz’s voice is still hella annoying.
