Like Bebel Gilberto's album last year, Moreno Veloso's solo debut comes with unavoidable expectations. The son of Tropicalismo star Caetano Veloso, the young singer/songwriter is, by default, Brazilian music royalty, expected to launch the nation's rich tradition into the 21st century. And like Gilberto, his debut does not disappoint.
Music Typewriter isn't a flashy, showy record. There are hints of modern electronic influences and the occasional combustible moment, but this is largely a very subtle record with plenty going on beneath the surface. Veloso showcases his understated songwriting techniques, strumming on his guitar and quoting freely from Gilberto Gil songs while his bandmates bash away on bedsprings, tablas, theremins and frame drums. There are a few awkward moments mixed in with the exuberant, hushed pop, but for a first record, Music Typewriter is a gem.MG
