MR. LIF

El-P handles most of the beats on Mr. Lif’s new album, and his bit-crushed bounce definitely complements the characteristically brainy recurring theme of Mo’ Mega: the space between black America and the hyper-modern, pressurized, freeze-dried, shrink-wrapped new world. The production bangs, and there are many references that’ll appeal to readers of liberal non-fiction (Fast Food Nation, Chomsky, Al Gore), but some of the good Mr.’s thoughts on this future we live in are unconvincing: i.e., “Helicopters now replaced by flying saucers” – er, not quite yet, Lif. It’s best when he gets silly and advises to Washitup!, or trades lines with Murs upon the bubbly funk bass of Murs Iz My Mananger.

Mr. Lif brings his braidy bunch to the Reverb on Tuesday (June 20).
