Mr. Oizo

Rating: NNN

Mr. Oizo (aka Quentin Dupieux) got famous with a jean commercial featuring a funny little puppet named Flat Eric. The ad spawned a massive club hit and a full-length album. That was about four years ago, and in the meantime Dupieux seems to have gone a bit mad, maybe due to the “non-movie” he made but never released. The longest song on here is just a little over three minutes (in a genre that sometimes approaches the 10-minute mark), and it veers from distorted electro-house to tracks that sound like a CD player skipping, or in some cases a Nintendo reprogrammed by a meth head. It’s an intensely spastic and uneasy listen, but there’s something engrossing in it, kind of like a car crash.
