Mr. Rick and the Biscuits

Rating: NNNN

A rootsy, folksy mash that runs the gamut from fingerpickin’ country and tub-thumping blues to gospel and Texas swing. Luther Wheatstraw and Jordan Burns lay down a comfortable and solid rhythm section for Mr. Rick’s tasty picking and high lonesome tenor. The song list is mostly old classics with some novelty originals and a surprising take on The House Of The Rising Sun. Fans of Doc Watson, Bob Wills and Hank Williams will be happy. Most enjoyable is the album’s mellow small-room sound, as though Mr. Rick and his band were playing in the next room while you loll on your porch swing nursing a Sazerac.

Mr. Rick and his crew launch their CD at Hugh’s Room Wednesday (June 15).
