Seeing left coast hiphop MC Murs, armed with only a microphone, silence a gabby crowd of CD shoppers at Austin's Waterloo Records was a highlight of the SXSW 2004 schmoozefest. Few rappers working today can match the narrative skills of Murs, and he's at his best when there's some drama involved, like on the track Walk Like A Man. The three-part epic serves as a centrepiece on 3:16 - The 9th Edition and could've been a hiphop classic for years to come if the production chops of 9th Wonder were up to scratch. Unfortunately, his reliance on the played-out Kanye West shtick of speeded-up soul singer loops works to the album's detriment.
Watch Murs tear up the Funhaus with his Def Jux cohorts Mr. Lif, Akrobatik and Fakts One Wednesday (April 28).
