MUSIQ SOULCHILD

Rating: NN

MUSIQ SOULCHILD Aijuswanaseing (Def Soul/Universal) Rating: NNDon’t let the appallingly creative spelling and New Age mumbo jumbo fool you. Philadelphia crooner Musiq Soulchild might try terribly hard on his Aijuswanaseing debut to be the new D’Angelo, but he’s more R Kelly with a blowout.

All the requisite elements appear to be in place: hip nu-soul producers like James Poyser and Vikter Duplaix help out with beats, the hit song samples the Roots, and there are gooey, non-threatening lyrics about just wanting to get to know you. But Soulchild isn’t above comparing his girl to a Benz and relying on other familiar R&B cornball tactics. As cheesy as his name suggests. Musiq Soulchild opens for Erykah Badu at Massey Hall February 19.
