Somewhere deep in the forests of bucolic western Massachusetts, Matt Valentine and Erika Elder commune with fellow hippie holdouts in a free exchange of musical ideas, galactic observations and various herbal remedies as ensemble MV & EE with the Bummer Road. Their latest venture, Green Blues, finds our hairy horde hooking up with Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace! boutique label, which results in their ditching the typically quaint hand-assembled CD-R jobs of the past for a store-ready digipack product. Although they now must put up with the added tweakery of special guests J. Mascis and experimental drummer-for-hire Tim Barnes, MV & EE's woozy dulcimer- and flute-enhanced odes to the sweet leaf still come well clouded in a way that conjures unholy images of a candlelit YaHoWha 13 tribute to Canned Heat. Green Blues is not quite freak folk for the masses, but neither is it as 'out there' as label boss Moore would have you believe.
