NANCI GRIFFITH

Rating: NN

While the whole country music business is trying to figure out how to be more rootsy, to cash in on the O Brother phenomenon, Nanci Griffith decides that her first proper studio album of new material in seven years should be a big, blowhard Nashville-type production. The prissy folk strummer tries growling to be heard over the booming drums and sweeping strings. But then, the idea of Griffith being drowned out doesn’t seem like such a drawback once you hear the mawkish drivel that Carson McCullers’s novel Clock Without Hands inspired her to write. Tickets are still available for Nanci Griffith’s Phoenix gig Tuesday (September 11).
