Nathan LAWR The Heart Beats A Waltz (independent) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN
Nathan Lawr has spent enough time holding down a steady drumbeat in Royal City and the Fembots to figure out what makes a song tick, and that experience is evident on his first solo collection of lovely pop gems. It helps that he can call in favours from all his musician pals - including half of Royal City, Guelph folk-rock notable Nick Craine and Boy's Stephen Kozmeniuk - but Lawr remains the main attraction. His warm, washed-out vocals sit firmly in the centre of every song, while gently twangy guitar hooks, kitchen jam percussion, subtle string arrangements and horn flourishes orbit in an awesome rootsy orch-pop halo. Nathan Lawr launches The Heart Beats A Waltz with his band of Minotaurs tonight (Thursday, July 3) at the Rivoli.
